Grape Varieties

Roupeiro

Roupeiro is one of the main white grape varieties found in all viticultural areas in the Alentejo region. When young, the wine has a fine, balanced aroma and is pale straw yellow in colour.

Rabo de Ovelha

Rabo de Ovelha is also one of the most representative varieties in Alentejo viticultural area. The bunches have a medium size, with uniform, small and rounded grapes.

Antão Vaz

This variety has some resistance to drought, which makes it well adapted to the climate in Alentejo, showing a consistent quality every year. The wine is generally citrine coloured, has a fine and persistent aroma, slightly sharp in the mouth and  balanced in the aftertaste.

Arinto

This is one of the most cultivated white grape varieties in Portugal. It adapts easily to the different soils, needing heat and humidity. Wine from this grape variety is highly complex, fruity and showing balanced acidity.

Castelão

Castelão is a very important variety in the south of Portugal. It grows specially well in hot climate and dry soils. The bunches and grapes are small, producing aromatic wines that are smooth and well balanced.

Trincadeira

Trincadeira is one of the most ancient and traditional grape varieties in the Alentejo region. It adapts well to dry soils and to a climate with very hot summers. The bunches are large and compact, having medium rounded grapes blue-black in colour. Wine from this grape variety has an intense colour, a fruity but characteristically herby aroma, showing a good structure and richness in tannins. Trincadeira contributes decisively to the quality and typicality of Alentejo wines, whether as single varietal or in blends.

Aragonez

This variety grows very well in sandy and limestone clay soils, showing a good production level. The bunches are medium sized, with small and slightly blue-black flattened grapes. The wines are full bodied, rich in colour and with great ageing potential.

Syrah

The bunches and grapes of this variety are small and uniform with good tannins that originate dense and full bodied wines with a deep colour. It has ageing potential, enabling the development of aromas.

Alicante Bouschet

This grape variety shows medium sized bunches, with rounded grapes. The wine is full bodied and deep in colour.

Cabernet Sauvignon

In Portugal this is probably the foreign grape variety mostly used. The grapes are small, blue-black in colour, and have a thick skin. The ripening process is slow and takes places late. Wines show good acidity, are very aromatic and have a persistent taste, as well as tannins that make them wines for ageing.

Touriga Nacional

The bunches have small rounded grapes of different sizes. The vine spacing method has strong influence in the development of this grape variety. Wines with well balanced acidity, full bodied, showing complex herby and resin aromas. Great ageing potential.
