European Business & Biodiversity Initiative
Estremoz is a city with unique character and natural richness.

The respect of Estremoz inhabitants for its natural and cultural heritage requires that economic agents of the region be not only part of the solution, but also pro-active in preserving and developing this extraordinary heritage.

The Initiative on Business & Biodiversity created a European Network launched during the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union in 2007 with the aim of promoting relations between companies and biodiversity. The main purpose was to increase the companies' activities in the scope of biodiversity protection and avoid its loss at local, regional, national and global level.

There is a commitment (Memorandum of Understanding) between João Portugal Ramos Family Estates and the Portuguese Nature Conservation Institute for a common good and biodiversity protection, putting into practice the general principle of Sustainable Development: "Think global, act local".

For implementing a responsible code of conduct from João Portugal Ramos Family Estates in terms of biodiversity and nature preservation, the Memorandum of Understanding sets the strategy to be adopted by the company with the following objectives:
 1. Development of a management model that includes biodiversity, improving or maintaining the existing habitats in the estates;
 2. Development of biodiversity characterization studies focused on flora and bird population;
 3. Implementation of measures for promoting biodiversity;
 4. Development of contents for informing about biodiversity in association with agro-ecosystems existing in the estates.
